The Concrete/Wooden Bollards of Abdy...

Concrete/Wooden Abdy Bollards...

This particular site hasn't been going that long but bollards has and it's moments like this that make it all worth while when you manage to find a bollard(s) so special.

A special thank you to @Bathcat on the twitter for providing me with these wonderful pictures of these amazing bollards of which are located on the verge of a field in the village of Abdy, South Yorkshire (please note map reference on this page is not accurate).

Wooden core...

If we take a close look at the picture (above) we can see clearly the wooden core/centre and  then what appears to be a very basic concrete mix. I must say if it wasn't for the wooden core you might mistake this for a pile of old dung. I jest and must say these bollards almost look 'stoneage', don't they look fantastic lining the grass verge.

Bollard News...

Welcome to 'bollard news' a new feature to this blog/site where we look at some of the news involving bollards over the past week...

In our first piece this week we take a look at a 'Bollards HQ' promoting polymer bollards over the more traditional cast iron style/type www.bollardshq.co.uk .

Please do take a look at the Cleft Wood Company who just happen to make beautiful natural wooden bollards www.cleftwood.com .

Finally we take a look at a blog by the Swanage Coastguard www.swanagecoastguard.blogspot.com testing out some removable bollards.

Thank you once again for visiting this blog/site and please do remember this particular site unlike Bollards of London relies on you providing me with pictures of bollards you may happen to come across around Britain.

Bollards of Britain featuring 'bollard news'...

Welcome to Scotland...

What a pair...

Can I start this post with a huge thank you to @TaniceJudge on the twitter who has been rather busy taking the odd photograph of the more usual bollards that we tend to find in urban city centres close to speed humps, road narrowing projects or just the simple pavement bollard designed and planted to stop motorists parking on the pavement.

The picture (above) is of a pair of plastic/composite material bollards that have a circular base that tapers slightly and then rises upwards towards a red/white reflective band/area very close to the slightly domed top. If we look at the bollards (below) we see circular shaped bollards with a different domed top and more reflective strips at the base and top area. These bollards happen to be placed on the pavement close to speed humps which are placed on the road.

Plastic/composite bollards...

A different shape...

Our next bollard (above) is an odd shape for it has a square base which rises vertically and then tapers at the corners and then changes shape to form an octagonal column. We then see two white reflective bands before the bollard is capped off nicely with a half ball shaped top.

Below though we see a very simple plain looking pavement bollard that is here to stop motorists from parking on the pavement. I must say it certainly does rain a lot more north of the border and once again thank @TaniceJudge for an excellent set of Scottish/Glasgow bollards.

It's raining...

The 5th Winchester Bollard (boll-art)...

The 5th painted bollard 'boll-art'...

Here is the 5th painted bollard of Winchester City Centre and another fine example of 'boll-art' within Britain. Can I say yet again what a pleasure it was for bollards to be featured in the Southwark News (south London local paper) and then for the Sun Newspaper to run the story over the weekend regarding 'boll-art'.

If you click on the link above you'll see the lead picture of the bollards in Peckham (south east London) well due to the coverage of the Sun Newspaper the artist responsible left a comment on Bollards of London site and now I hope to get in touch with individual responsible for some amazing art work on street furniture in Peckham.

Now unlike Bollards of London site which has a defined border accessible to me this site relies totally on you and to ensure we cover Britain I'll be introducing not just your pictures but a 'bollard' news feature with the help of Google.

City of London 1993 Vintage Bollard...

We are at the heart of the financial district of London, the UK, Europe and probably the World. This bollard is on the pavement in front of the Royal Exchange which just happens to be close to the Bank of England and the world's oddest traffic junction called Bank.

I must thank the one and only @AboutLondon on the twitter who captured this excellent photograph of a City of London bollard (1993 vintage) getting a touch of the London Olympic clean up/new paint job so all the visitors and billions of viewers get a good view/impression of our capital city.

The City of London is the bollard HQ of the universe and has you can see they take great pride in their street furniture, just take a close look at the lamps on the right of the picture. Don't those improvised traffic cones look great with their stuck on 'Caution Wet Paint' signs and let's not forget the City worker in the background lighting up a cigarette.

Rochester Kent Bollard...

We are at Rochester High Street in the county of Kent where the wonderful Martin Evans (again) photographed this beautiful tapering circular based bollard. The bollard happens to be black/gloss in colour with two gold ribbed bands that adorn the middle and upper part of the body. The bollard top is a half ball domed top shape.

If we take a close look at the picture (below) we can see a close up of the crest/emblem that is placed upon this bollard (upper part). The crest/emblem is that of the former Rochester City Council please do click on the link and scroll down and read a little above this unusual emblem/crest. Note I've never seen a crest/emblem with a letter placed in the middle of the actual shield.

Please note the map reference is not accurate on this posting but you will/would find this bollard on the high street. May I also thank you all for visiting this site and providing me with many pictures/photographs of bollards from around Britain. Unlike Bollards of London this blog/site really does rely on you and your photographs of these wonderful often forgotten pieces of street furniture. #thankyou
